Origins and Inspiration
SolaTeach began in 2023 with a small group of learners, one volunteer, and basic tools. Over time, it evolved into a structured platform offering English language instruction, digital skills, communication training, and career readiness support. The inspiration behind the initiative came directly from learners, particularly young Afghan women and girls who consistently expressed their determination to learn despite restrictive and discouraging conditions. Many reached out with a simple request not to stop teaching them. Their resilience and commitment transformed empathy into action and reinforced the belief that small, consistent efforts can lead to meaningful solutions. This experience also highlighted that young people need more than academic knowledge. They require practical skills such as English for communication, digital literacy for remote learning and work, and the confidence to navigate uncertain futures.

Key Achievements
SolaTeach has grown from a pilot initiative into a platform with measurable outcomes. Since 2023, it has trained more than 1,000 learners, primarily Afghan girls and youth, through free online programs. The platform is preparing to welcome 760 new learners in January 2026. It has developed a flexible learning model that functions in low connectivity and restrictive environments. Learners have demonstrated tangible progress, including improved English communication, stronger digital skills, and increased career readiness through CV development, guidance, and confidence building. The initiative has sustained delivery through a committed volunteer supported team and consistent programming. In parallel, Hamayun’s literary work has received international recognition. His book The Death Within received the International Impact Book Award in 2025, while his broader education and social impact efforts were recognized with the Global Recognition Award in the same year. He has also published articles and policy focused writings addressing Afghanistan’s education, development, and economic challenges. Beyond SolaTeach, he is developing complementary initiatives that connect Afghan youth, including those in the diaspora, to wider support systems. These include New Roots USA, which focuses on integration and wellbeing support for Afghan and immigrant youth in the United States, and the NewGen Afghan American Alliance, which promotes youth leadership and career pathways.
Future Plans
In 2026, the primary focus is growth with quality. The goal is to ensure that SolaTeach remains safe, consistent, and impact driven while expanding its reach. Planned priorities include strengthening learning quality through improved assessments and progress tracking, expanding the Free Learning Library to support independent study, and deepening career readiness and mentorship offerings such as CV support, interview preparation, and professional talks.
Additional plans include building stronger partnerships to enhance sustainability and keep programs free, as well as integrating basic wellbeing support through culturally respectful and safe content.
Challenges and Responses
Operating in fragile contexts presents ongoing challenges. Limited internet access, power disruptions, and device shortages affect many learners. These constraints have been addressed through flexible lesson design, low data tools, multi format learning materials, and schedules adapted to connectivity windows. Safety and privacy concerns, particularly for female learners, remain critical. These have been mitigated through strict confidentiality practices, trust based engagement, and clear safeguarding guidelines. Funding limitations pose another challenge to keeping programs free. This has been addressed by maintaining lean operations, relying on volunteers, and prioritizing measurable impact. Emotional pressure is also a constant factor for both learners and program teams. A supportive environment, healthy communication practices, and consistent engagement have been central to sustaining morale and hope.

Advice to Young Changemakers
Hamayun Khan emphasizes the importance of starting with available resources rather than waiting for ideal conditions. He encourages young people to focus on solving real problems by listening closely to those they aim to serve. Consistency, he notes, is essential, as impact is built over time. Measuring progress strengthens learning and credibility, while integrity builds trust. Finally, he stresses the value of community, partnerships, and collective effort in multiplying impact.
